supported increasing fear in a nation that once felt impenetrable. In the recent elections, support for George W. Bush appeared to be linked to the sense that terrorism was
still a threat and Bush has been doing a good job since his choice to go to war in Iraq. Repeated erroneous statements about connections between Iraq and al
Qaeda further supported a Bush victory in the 2004 elections. Following the attacks of September 11, 2001, the news media concentrated
on certain aspects of the story that shaped public opinion about the events. Initially, many were surprised at the extent of coverage, because news coverage began just after the
first plane hit the first tower of the World Trade Center, resulting in film footage of the second attack. One might think that the accuracy of the reporting process
would be defined by the immediacy of the film footage, but a variety of different elements came into play just after the second tower fell. The results of the
news coverage led to negative public opinion of Muslims, of the threat of terrorists, and a positive image of the need for war directed by the Bush Presidency.
The questionnaire provided in the Appendix relates to the issue of news bias and the reporting surrounding the events of September 11th. This
questionnaire seeks to answer some of the following research questions: 1. How does media bias come into play in news reporting? 2. How does the mass media
impact public opinion? 3. What central issues following the attacks of 9/11 were impacted by news coverage? 4. Did the news media create a public opinion environment that
