Abstract In Simmons
and Gaebeleins A Question of Character, the authors look at the way in which character can be seen to have a significant impact on personal development and the way in
which the individual deals with situations. They make the point that while character can to some extent be considered to be innate, it is also something which is formed through
interaction with others and through personal experience, and therefore can be strengthened and developed over the course of time.
They use a number of examples from military history to show the way in which character can be the
deciding factor in terms of military success, and show how these inspiring examples can be applied to everyday life. They also make the point that the character of an individual
can have a salient effect on the way in which a whole community perceives itself and its behaviour, and consider the question of national leadership from this perspective. --------------------------------------------------------------------------
