Discussion Morrison structures her novel so that it takes place in the present and the past; she uses flashbacks extensively to tell us what happened in Sethes past to create
the character that exists in the present. As we move through the categories suggested as a way to approach the character analysis, some of in the information will repeat, as
it applies to more than one aspect of Sethes life. Description of the character: Sethe is a former slave, and it is this existence-as a piece of property-that has defined
her and her life. The actions shes taken, the problems she has, her troubled relationships, all of these can be traced to the traumatic experience of being kept in bondage,
and all the degradation that goes with it, for years. Problem and its history: The actual problem presented in the story appears to be the intense and unhealthy attachment for
Beloved to Sethe, and Denver to Beloved. This problematic relationship among the women stops them from moving forward and having any kind of normal life. Current situation: As the book
begins, Paul D comes back into Sethes life after an absence of 20 years. He stirs up the ghost of Beloved, and he also alienates Sethes daughter Denver, who hates
him because Beloved is interested in him; Denver wants to keep Beloved to herself, because she is lonely. Relevant background: None of this makes much sense without explaining the background
briefly. Sethe, as noted above, is a former slave, and that experience has made her the person she is at the beginning of the novel. The book opens in Cincinnati
