of all time. His "feigned madness" adds both interest and depth to his character. This same "madness", however, serves as an opaque mask to a very real underlying
psychological problem. That problem is depression and it is a problem which Hamlet is striving very hard to conceal both from himself and the outside world. With just
a casual review of the circumstances of his life, however, it becomes obvious that Hamlet has several very real reasons to be depressed. His father (also named Hamlet and
referred to variously as the "Old King" and "Old Hamlet") has been murdered and his mother has abruptly entered into an incestuous marriage with his fathers brother, Claudius. Although
the pretense is that Hamlets father died from snakebite, in reality he was poisoned by Claudius who poured poison in his ear as he slept. Although the death was
quick, it was tortuous and gruesome. The real problem at hand in this story, however, is Hamlets degrading mental condition, a condition which left unaddressed is sure to progress
to the point where there is no recovery possible. Hamlet, understandably, is deeply wounded by the circumstances at an emotional level. His
mother Gertrude married Claudius less than a month after the murder. Although Hamlets mother Gertrude is apparently unaware of the murder, it is easy to speculate that she had
been immersed in an adulterous affair with Claudius prior to her husbands death. This affair is believed, in fact, to have been the motivation for the murder. Another
obvious motivation would have been the fact that the death of the king would result in Claudius being appointed king. Whether this appointment occurred as a result of his
