Kali is certainly a well developed and mature character for a high school student. She wants to get married but she is still rather young. Ms. Johnson conveys her own
personal story in the hopes that it will affect this characters future choices. The teacher takes her job seriously, and it seems that Kali integrates this information and shares her
feelings as well. Kali is also quite responsible. She has a job and will not take off of work for one night to go out to dinner with part of
the class. She exhibits a great deal of insight, maturity and responsibility in terms of how she runs her life. Emilio on the other hand shows a lack of responsibility
as he gets into fights, sees no future for himself and he, and his cohorts, think in a "tit for tat" way where retribution and gang warfare are a part
of their world. Each of the characters--Emilio and Kali-- are young and vulnerable, but while Kali considers her choices, Emilio reacts in the only way he knows how, with violence.
2. What pedagogical methods does Ms. Johnson use to stimulate her students cognitive development? Ms. Johnson uses a variety of techniques inclusive of innovative ways to motivate students.
She also addresses other issues that the students face in their daily lives. In other words, it is a given that the students do not put education high on their
