use of evolutionary psychology has been used to explain how and why infidelity takes place and the driving forces behind infidelity (Nannini and Meyers, 2000). The actual rate of infidelity
is difficult to ascertain, by its nature it is undertaken covertly. Lawson (1989), states that married men will stray more than married women with between 50% - 65% of the
men straying under the age of 40 years compared to between 25% - 50% of women. Scarf (1996) has a similar estimate for male infidelity, but estimates female
infidelity at between 45% - 55%. Vaughan (2003) take this even higher with an estimate that "60% of men and 40% of women will have an extramarital affair". It
is also noted that this means infidelity is likely to impact on a large number of marriages as it is unlikely that the men and women that are being unfaithful
are likely to come from the same marriages. Using the statistics that are excepted as estimates only, she argued that if half of the women are in the same marriages
as the 60% of men that having affairs this means that 80% of all marriages will be effected by infidelity (Vaughan, 2003). Vaughan also argues that it is unlikely that
with this level of occurrence the reasons behind infidelity are unlikely to be simply due to the failings or short comings of one of the partners in a relationship.
The problems with infidelity are the negative impacts this has on individuals and on society. The sides and estimates quoted it is likely that the rates of infidelity are higher
than those declared, increased social equality and liberalisation, a higher rate of cohabiting couples where there is a slightly higher rate of expected infidelity (Olenick, 2000), and the general social
