have studied the new print advertisement our advertising agency has just created. I have some concerns about its use and felt I should bring these to your attention. The following
comments address three specific issues with regard to the advertisement. My first concern is that this advertisement creates a false impression both of smoking and of our product. The graphic
is extremely strong, showing a young, attractive couple in a convertible. The woman is straddling the mans lap, facing him, but her face is turned toward the camera so that
she is looking directly at us. She has a cigarette in her mouth and her expression can perhaps be described as "fierce," or "defiant." Her partner is smiling up at
her. The impression that is created here is that smoking makes people happy, and attractive to the opposite sex. While it can be argued that many smokers enjoy smoking, we
are treading on dangerous ground by suggesting that smoking will enable people to find partners. Clearly sex sells, because many companies use this device, but the implication is questionable. The
association of smoking with sexual attractiveness is reinforced by the physical position of the couple. There is also a question about the attitudes of the couple that could possibly be
misconstrued. The womans expression is defiant, even angry, while the man is smiling up at her. This suggests that he is pleased with her attitude, but it can also be
interpreted to mean that he is amused by it. In other words, he finds it funny that she is trying to identify herself as an independent woman when clearly she
is not. While this interpretation is admittedly not one that would occur to most people, I believe there is a possibility that a number of women would see this as
