Ethics do play a large role in business dealings and while people possess moral convictions that are stern in terms of mutability, there are gray areas always and these must be decided. Someone may take pencils home from work and thing nothing of it, but taking home a tape dispenser seems a bit like stealing. Where does one draw the line? That line is representative of an individual ethical stance. First, what are ethics? Ethical thought begins with the Sophists of the Greek World that emanated during the fifth century (Honderich, 1995). The Greeks appear to be the first thinkers to raise points about moral conduct. In Nicomachean Ethics, for example, Aristotle asserts that the ultimate end to all human action is happiness (1995). Aristotle says: "To judge from the lives that men lead, most men, and men of the most vulgar type, seem (not without some ground) to identify the good, or happiness, with pleasure; which is the reason why they love the life of enjoyment. For there are, we may say, three prominent types of life- that just mentioned, the political, and thirdly the contemplative" life" (Aristotle, 350 B.C.E.). Here, Aristotle divides life into types. Such a typology is applicable to any era. Certainly today there is ordinary life and political life. One can see the difference in lives between politicians-whose dirty laundry is aired everyday-versus private citizens. There is the contemplative life, like Aristotles, and while today it is thought that the society is dumbed-down to an extent, it is true that modern day philosophers exist among the people.
