two people believe exactly the same thing, each person expresses their own individuality in their spiritual orientation. How a person perceives the role of religion in society and the
fundamental principles of a religion such as Christianity depends largely on their background, education, and historical perspective. It appears to me that from the time that Martin Luther first
nailed his Ninety-five Theses to a German church door, Christianity has been slowly evolving toward a ethos that promotes a set of moral principles, rather then a blind adherence to
a dogma. In the early part of the twentieth century, the German theologian Karl Barth reached a crisis in faith as he watched teachers and professors that he admired line
up behind the German leadership during World War I. It was at this point that Barth realized that he could no longer follow either their "ethics and dogmatics" or their
"understanding of the Bible and of history" (Barth 14). The young minister realized that "nineteenth century theology no longer held any future" (Barth 14). Consequently, Barth began to formulate
a personal theology based solely on scripture, virtually ignoring the theological principles of the past. Others, such as Dietrich Bonhoeffer, joined him in this endeavor. Bonhoeffer stated that "the
reality of God and the reality of the world which is founded in Jesus Christ,....the reality of God is revealed only to one who involves himself wholly in the reality
of the world" (Zahrnt 163). Theologians such as Paul Tillich have added to this line of reasoning. Tillichs concept of "belief-ful" reality presents a modern model for regarding the topic
