an ethical code to live by. Someone once said ethics is difficult because its not a simple choice between right and wrong, but its often between right and right. This
paper considers how one might create a personal code of ethics; specifically in relation to how one relates to society as a whole; to individuals; and to oneself. Discussion We
begin with what seems to be a logical question: what is ethics? When this question is asked, replies range from ethics having to do with feelings, to religion, to the
law, or to societal standards or behavior among others (Velazquez et al, 2010). But none of these responses is adequate. Ethics can sometimes mirror feelings, but often they do not:
"A person following his or her feelings may recoil from doing what is right" (Velasquez et al, 2010). The same objection goes for defining ethics in terms of religion.
To suggest that ethics depends upon religious belief then suggests that only religious people are ethical. And yet we have seen terrible behavior from religious people (the most extreme example
is priests abusing young boys) and ethical behavior from people who never set foot in church. Clearly, ethics does not depend upon religion. Nor does it depend upon the law,
since as society changes, laws change, and things that were once legal, such as slavery, or the South African apartheid laws, are now abhorrent (Velasquez et al, 2010). These laws
