might affect how ethics are employed. A code of ethics used for personal experiences only is something that is likely aligned with broad moral principles. Yet, it is often the
case that different situations emerge that challenge ones commitment to their ethical code. At the same time, there are remedies for systems that do not seem to apply in all
areas. While it may appear disingenuous to say that a code can be flexible enough to allow for such remedies, ethics are not always immovable. It appears that for the
most part, people follow a personal code of ethics without even realizing it. Some examples of concepts in a personal code of ethics go to trying to help others, being
kind and to not doing harm to living things. Thiroux (2003) for example, in exploring how a personal code of ethics should be written, believes that humanitarian ideals loom large.
Principles on which one might base a personal code of ethics will likely be related to social norms and an adaptation of Judeo-Christian principles and values. These are values that
appear in American society today. Such a code is not necessarily based on specific philosophic or theological principles, but many principles can be tied to either philosophic or religious thought.
In developing a unique, personal system, questions emerge. Should a code be created that provides commands and dictums, such as "one will never lie," or should a
system have more flexibility? While the former, which may be aligned with Kantian ethics or the willing of a categorical imperative may be easier, it does provide a quandary at
times. That is, there will be incidents that occur when it appears that doing the right thing means going against a hard and fast ethical rule. In fact, Thiroux (2003)
