right thing, and within the Western tradition, there is something called moral philosophy ("Ethics," 2005). Within the realm of philosophy there is much attention to ethics and ides about right
and wrong. For example, there is something called the categorical imperative, where it is thought that moral rules must meet a litmus test. In other words, for something to be
an ethical rule, it would have to be universal. It is an idea that makes sense but there is a problem with it. Honderich (1995) writes: "The whole issue
of categorical imperative is extremely controversial, however, and there are a large number of interpretations and objections in the literature. The basic problem is that the test seems to yield
both false positives such as I shall smother infants who keep me awake at night by crying..." (p.437). One cannot mandate a rule that will result in the death of
a human being. That is obvious. Other examples used to test ethics go to something called a lying promise. If one decides it is always right to tell the truth,
what if someone is faced with the option of lying to save a life? In a life or death situation, it may be considered moral to steal or lie. Anti-abortion
activists have taken this a step further, considering their murdering of abortion doctors moral. One can see where thinking can be warped. If this is the case, what should a
person do in developing a moral philosophy? Thiroux (2003) suggests that one create principles that can be applied to a variety of situations. In doing so, one would be hard
