past or present. The following is a restatement of the principal points from Emersons famous essay. Therefore, it should be understood that although the text is not referenced,
as such, all of the points made come directly from Emersons essay, as this paper is intended as a paraphrase of that work If in his private heart, an individual
believes something to be true then it will also be true for all others. To substantiate this, simply look to works of genius and in them, one can see
thoughts that resemble their own, but come back to them with a certain "alienated majesty." In other words, its not the thoughts that make something a work of
genius, but rather the fact that this particular person carried through with his thoughts. People constantly look towards those who are presumably "better" than themselves for guidance, but
frequently, if one just examines the writing of others carefully, they can easily discern thoughts that have, likewise, occurred to them. In constantly looking towards others for guidance, the individual
discredits his own spark of the divine. Individuality is a gift from God; however, people often appear to be ashamed of that spark of divinity that each of us possesses.
The young are the best in expressing the proper faith in their own abilities because their minds are, as yet, unaltered by the expectations and restrictions of society. The restrictions
of society tend to imprison a person within his own consciousness, but the person who trusts himself meets life head-on and pursues his gifts with determination. One
