Discussion The story tells of the visit of Jing-mei to her half-sisters in China; girls who were abandoned by their mother when the Japanese invaded and she had to flee (Tan, 1989). Like most of Tans work, the story is about the characters and their relationships and doesnt depend for effect on action or suspense. Life in China 1937-1945: This was the period of the Sino-Japanese War and the Japanese invasion of China; it was a dreadful period in the life of the Chinese (Sino-Japanese war 1937-1945). The resistance to the Japanese is generally believed to have begun on July, 7, 1937, "when a clash occurred between Chinese and Japanese troops outside Beijing (then renamed Beiping) near the Marco Polo Bridge" (Sino-Japanese war 1937-1945). The skirmish marked "the beginning of open, though undeclared, war between China and Japan" as well as hastening the "formal announcement of the second Guomindang-CCP united front against Japan" (Sino-Japanese war 1937-1945). The Japanese occupation was brutal and included an episode that has come to be known as the "Nanking Massacre," a six-week orgy of murder, rape, beatings, beheading and looting that illustrates the depths to which human beings can sink. On December 9, 1937, Japanese troops attacked the city of Nanking; on the 13th, the "6th and 16th Divisions of the Japanese Army entered the city s Zhongshan and Pacific Gates"; the navy arrived that afternoon (History of Nanking massacre, 2005). During the next six weeks, the Japanese killed at least 300,000 Chinese, including some 20,000 women who were raped first (History of Nanking massacre, 2005).
