types of pollution are there? And what has been done to try to reduce pollution, both from a federal and personal level?
To answer these questions, it would first be helpful to determine what, exactly, pollution is. A pollutant is defined as any solid, liquid or gas that is present in a
form that could be dangerous to the environment (Pink Money, 2004). Pollution types include, but are not limited to nitrous oxide, fluoride compounds, metals (such as mercury and lead), organic
pollutants (benzene and methane), peterochemical pollutants (ethylene, which is what is in most gasolines); other matter such as smoke from fires and soot, solid waste (litter) and poisons such as
fungicides and herbicides (Pink Money, 2004). There is also noise pollution, which assaults the ears (Pink Money, 2004). Pollutants are typically classified
as nondegradable and biodegradable (Pink Money, 2004). Nondegradable pollutants are those that dont degrade (or degrade slowly) in the environment (Pink Money, 2004). These include aluminum cans and DDT (Pink
Money, 2004). Biodegradable pollutants, as one can tell from the name, do degrade rapidly (Pink Money, 2004). Such pollutants include domestic sewage (Pink Money, 2004). Out of all of these,
air pollution is considered to be among the most dangerous and common type of pollution these days (Pink Money, 2004). Air pollution is thought to be causing what is known
as the Green House effect, during which large amounts of carbon dioxide are released into the air from burning of fossil fuels and other things (not to mention animal respiration)
