slice of life, a moment frozen in time, and described for its emotional as well as its scenic aspects. Therefore, when poets speak about what it is that they do,
they generally tend to use heightened symbolism in their works. For example, Adrienne Rich, in her work, A Woman Mourned by Daughters, speaks about the nature of poetry utilizing many
literary elements. This is a poem told in retrospect. It moves from the present time into the past. A mother has died. Two daughters gather around to discuss their
loss. It is an ambivalent time as surprisingly the daughters are not too unhappy that their mother has crossed over. She pushed them too much, held them up to such
high standards. The daughters are symbolic of the many poems that the poet has created. Like a mother, the poet nurtures, cares for, prunes, prods, suggests, nags and worries
over each poem attempting to find just the right word that will portray its character just right. In this case, then, the literary tool of symbolism is used. Secondly, Adrienne
Rich uses literary elements in her work as evidenced by her use of personification. She has literally transformed her poems into daughters and herself into a mother. They think that
now that she is gone that they will have some rest, that no one will bother them anymore, least of all their mother. And yet, they are shocked to find
out that her presence lingers in their minds and in their complete make-up. There is no escaping the influence of their mother. In this respect, then, the poems, becoming
