actual physical actions or schools of thought, which have both negatively and positively impacted civilization. In the West one has to think that the ability to educate oneself was linked
with the ability to rise out of ones humble circumstances and take advantage of that American Dream. However, simply sending ones children to school was not enough to accomplish this
task as many early educators did not know how to teach so that children would or could learn. The extraordinary potential of a child and a childs mind was not
wasted on the intellectual and philosophical pursuits of John Dewey. His contributions to education still stand as one of the premier events in the history of the Western world.
This socially impacting notion was at first ridiculed by most of John Deweys contemporaries. Most of them were under the prevailing notion of the day and age that those who
tested well were therefore more intelligent. Those who were more intelligent were viewed to be more moral, possess a superior work ethic, and more altruistic in their endeavors. This obviously
segregated way of thinking only served to allow those families and persons in power to remain in power, while those who quite possibly had the talent and ability were relegated
to a calling more suited to their socioeconomic status. In other words, if one were poor, one would be placed on the vocational track, while those of a middle to
upper class background would be pressed into academic tracks. Today, one shudders to think about the wasted potential of that time. John Dewey
