is Hard to Find with regard to the changes, difficult decisions and life-altering situations faced by the characters. Discussion At first reading, there is very little that the two stories
have in common. The light, amusing look at a young mans "crush" on a pretty girl seems to have nothing to do with the mass murder of a family. Lets
begin by giving a brief plot summary of each to see where that leads us. In A&P, three girls in bathing suits come into the A&P [a chain of grocery
stores found in the Eastern United States] during the summer, and turn the place upside down by doing so. They have come from the beach but the manager insists that
its against company policy for them to come in unless their shoulders are covered. The clerk/narrator, who is unnamed, is completely enamored of the girls, and when the manager treats
them badly, he quits his job and rushes after them, eager for them to see him as their knight in shining armor. Of course by then theyre gone, and he
is left without a job and with the knowledge that he has disappointed both his parents and the manager, who are all friends. In the OConnor story, a family comprised
of a husband and wife, their two children and the husbands mother take a road trip. Although the grandmother is against it because an escaped convicted named The Misfit is
allegedly going the same way, she is overruled. The family is in a wreck, and as they struggle to overcome the effects of the accident, three men come upon the
scene. Its the Misfit and his accomplices; the three men murder the entire family. One story then is about the beginning of life (the narrator is 19) and the other
