not a shocking or incredibly intense story it is a story about a very realistic situation that leads the young man to quit his job and realize that the world
will, thereafter, be a difficult one to live in and struggle within. This story, and clearly the ending, offers the reader a look at the demands of conformity and nonconformity.
The following paper examines these elements in Updikes story. A&P: Conformity and Nonconformity As one critic notes, in relationship to the
conformity and nonconformity in this story, "The idea of conforming to a societys...set of rules has been questioned and rejected" by the narrator of the story (Rantings of a Queer
Pagan). The narrator does this in a very slow progression in the story, although he also does it immediately as well for in a second he makes a choice that
will peg him as a nonconformist. In better understanding the progression, however, it is perhaps important to look at the story unfold as the narrator watches and thinks.
In this story the narrator is working at a convenience store. These girls come in dressed in their bathing suits. The region, the town,
is actually a waterfront town so this should not seem incredibly out of place in the summer. But, it is very different from what they expect in this little New
England community that conforms to the rules of society. The narrator states the following, which helps the reader see how typical and normal and perhaps boring, these people are in
this town: "I bet you could set off dynamite in an A & P and the people would by and large keep reaching and checking oatmeal off their lists and
