The following discussion of Claibornes text focuses on three ideas presented by Claiborne that are new to this writer/tutor and, then, discusses three statements by the author that were found to be particularly intriguing before presenting personal reflection. 3 ideas The first new idea encountered was that the gospel narratives, the "words Jesus swiped from the imperial lexicon," constitute political satire (Claiborne 66). However, Claiborne goes on to say that Jesus purpose was not political, making it clear that Jesus had no interest in reforming governments (Claiborne 71). Rather Jesus called upon Israel to set an example for the world of how to live righteously, in accordance with the ethos of brotherhood and love that Jesus ministry envisioned. Nevertheless, Claibornes explanation of how words, such as "gospel," were understood during Roman times presents a persuasive argument that Jesus and his followers framed much of the message of the Good News in terms that were overtly political when understood in the cultural context of this era. Another new idea presented by the text is that Jesus was surrounded the signs of "mass trauma" caused by the Roman overlords (Claiborne 73). The Jewish historian Josephus describes the reaction of Rome to a widespread revolt in 4 BC, indicating that General Varus burned town and crucified as many of two thousand men a day (Claiborne 73). The soldiers found it amusing to nail up the rebels in various postures and the crosses were so numerous "space could not be found for the crosses nor crosses for the bodies" (Claiborne 73).
