the harsh ending of American traditional family life and even of "American innocence." But then there are those who assess technology at its face-value-- as something that improved our ability
to communicate, expanded job opportunities, and ultimately created both a more luxurious lifestyle for us and the highest standard of living on Earth. The answer
to the question seems to find a bit of both arguments in it. Indeed, early industry presented itself as both an alluring blessing and as an irresistible curse. For one
thing, improvements in the railroad and other forms of transportation made it much easier to travel. Cities grew in size and large numbers of people began to flock to
them for their newly-created job opportunities. Immigrants from all over the world were first beginning to set sail for the U.S. and we were welcoming them in large numbers.
But just as industry made the world smaller, it also made it larger -- both strange and unfamiliar. This where the American family began to die. Enormous city populations
began to create atmospheres in which we no longer knew our neighbors names. More people than ever walked by one another on the street without even any acknowledgment. Whites in
many areas still held feelings of resentment towards the ex-slaves and conditions for American-Negroes were terrible. The growth of industry created new jobs-- but many of
them were just improved versions of slavery. Those who could find work nowhere else were soon stockpiled in the equivalent of "sweat shops"-- working for low wages and in undesirable
conditions. Henceforth, every positive resulting from industry seemed to also yield a negative. Jobs were created but undesirable ones were as well. Transportation was improved but only at the expense
