the story. It is a simple story, yet one that clearly leaves us with a positively powered image that we do not expect. In the following paper we examine Wrights
story, analyzing various elements and images. A New Day One author, in discussing how another of Wrights works involving poetry, discusses some of the power behind the work
of Wright. So, although this particular review deals with Wrights other works, we find some enlightening comments concerning Wright himself. Bond states, "The appeal of the transcendent in Wrights work
lies largely in its power to disturb, to raise questions, invigorate an otherwise too-certain world....Unappeasable as the grief they inspire, they appear neither wholly dead nor alive but in a
state of perpetual rising into our lives" (116). When we take these statements and apply them to "A New Day" we see a very intricate relationship. As a reader
we are clearly disturbed by the fact that the best job this young man could hope to possess is that which involves taking care of a rich white woman. This
clearly raises questions for we wonder why this is his only hope. We ponder about why he would reduce himself to this position, or allow himself to be put in
such a position where this is his best hope. His entire family seems thrilled that he can have such a good job with good pay, never seeming to understand the
truth behind the fact that he will be nothing more than a paid slave in some ways. "Its honest work, aint it? his mother had said. Mrs. Davies aint
exactly a stranger. All our people down home worked for her people. They were mighty good to us and you should be proud to work for her" (Wright). It
