speech seems harsh by todays standards. Some might even classify Winthrop and his followers as zealots. On closer inspection, however, it becomes apparent that the message contains both
stern warnings and deep understanding of the human condition and the factors that challenge our everyday lives. Winthrop relies extensively on quotes from the Bible to illustrate these applications.
Although the context within which it is framed has changed, the message found in "A Model of Christian Charity" holds many pertinent lessons.
The overall message of this speech is essentially the golden rule, to do onto others as you would have others to do onto you. Winthrop instructs his listeners
to incorporate their beliefs into their lives in the new colonies, to insure that they uphold God even when challenged by the harsh circumstances they are sure to encounter.
Winthrop declared that in doing so we insured that: "this great king will have many
stewards, counting himself more honored in dispensing his gifts to man by man, than if he did it by his own immediate hands".
By living in a Godly manner we not only affect our own actions and the outcome of our lives but also
the lives of the "wicked" in that our examples serve to restrain the actions of those that might not have as much gentleness and temperance in their lives. By
