might they go about this? There are several ways of going about evaluating graffiti and what the expression means. Often, the messages are clear, but it is important to understand
the artist, who he or she associates with and what the message reveal in the appropriate social context. Gangs do use graffiti. They mark their territory with the use of
symbols (Struyk, 2006). Hence, part of the interpretation of graffiti may be associated with the idea that the writings are about marking territory, much the same way a dog marks
his in the real world. Territory here has to do with neighborhood, and in this sense, the graffiti-no matter what its content-serves as a warning to outsiders. Strangers walk through
the territory at their own risk. Under this line of thinking, the graffiti is seen as ominous. Part of a scheme to interpret graffiti in its context would be to
first explore the gangs that already exist in the neighborhood. Another step would be to collect demographics. Studies have been done regarding gender specific graffiti, so it is important to
know who is doing the writing and the makeup of the neighborhood. The content will be related to the demographics. Phillips claims that when looking at gangs and their
graffiti, it takes one down the road of gang politics (Ramirez, 2004). It to some extent helps to explain how gangs incorporated cultural systems and how relationships are formed between
