enables a greater insight to the altered consciousness associated with mental illness. The understanding is created as a result of the language which draws on ideas that the reader may
be able to relate with, even if in a secondary nature. The problem faced by King (2006) is the alien nature of the thoughts and feelings suffered by those with
mental illnesses. King gives some background to give the writing context, as well as a label to the illness; a schizoaffective disorder. This may help to place the audience at
ease in reading the article as it is creating a barrier or a separation and author is the other side of the barrier. The basic outline of the condition is
factual and increases the creditability of the article, basing some of the text on symptoms. It is after this that the illness is defined in terms of the impact it
has on thoughts and feelings. Depression is described as unreasonable; this is an interesting use of imagery as one would hardly expect any medical condition to be reasonable and
is furthered with the way that the attacks are described as ferocious. However, this emotive language gives insight into the way King feels about their illness. The difficulties are then
associated with a more physical symptom that the reader may be able to identify with; the inability to sleep, which leaves King exhausted. The feelings of joy and euphoria
associated with the manic stages also starts with commonplace association of joy, such as music and light. When we feel happy it is common place to make references to feeling
full of song, or referring something in terms of lighting up a life etc. These are common similes, but with the mental illness the feeling appear to be exaggerated and
