investigation it seems that much of what he wrote had too many discrepancies to really be considered real and so it is more often referred to as a novel than
an autobiography of the author. It is a story about James struggles with drug addiction and his slow movement towards finding himself valid and worthy of life. The following paper
examines his character, how he is clearly a man who feels bad abut himself, and how the character of Lilly and the book Tao te Ching make him realize that
being kind and vulnerable does not make him weak or endangered. A Million Little Pieces and Tao te Ching Throughout much of the work the reader sees the
narrator, James, constantly in some sort of horrendous physical withdrawal or high of some kind. Most people who are involved in drugs to this extent are individuals who are not
happy with themselves. They are individuals with a sense of "Fury" within them (Frey 181). In James situation, as it involved Lilly and Tao te Ching, the reader notes that
just before he takes note of this book, which his brother has given him, he gets a call from Lilly that leaves him constantly "smiling" (Frey 130). He has just
thrown up and obviously experienced writhing agony, yet he falls asleep, after her call, "Still. Eyes closed. Smiling" (Frey 130). The fact that both of these elements are combined in
the same time frame indicates that there is some deeper meaning to the two of them, them being Lilly and the book. Lillys call, even though he does not recognize
her voice at first, really seems to hit some chord within him that makes him smile, something he does not really do, and thus she evokes a feeling that he
