many plays, is a product of the time period from which it emerged. This play, one of Shakespeares most memorable, reflects values which sometimes differ radically from the contemporary
values of today. Indeed, the play is often politically incorrect when viewed from the contemporary standards which we have in place today. While the historic setting of "Midsummer
Nights Dream" inspired the poem it did not limit Shakespeares innovative drive. In some respects, in fact, this play could even be considered revolutionary in terms of the morals
and ethical assumptions which it portrays. A Midsummer Nights Dream is on the surface a comedy about love and marriage. The term
comedy is somewhat ambiguous, however, given the deeper meaning conveyed by the play. Shakespeare is noted for some of the most intricately detailed plays ever written. These plays
are typified by a wonderful assortment of characters, each of whom aid the other in emphasizing their individual roles and the overall significance and theme of the production. Midsummer
Nights Dream is no exception. While the lovers in the play would appear to be the primary focus, a number of secondary characters and subthemes actually deliver Shakespeares real
message. The fairies in the play are of particular interest in that they symbolize the historic circumstances of the day and Shakespeares desire to rise beyond those circumstances.
The apparent theme of Midsummers Night Dream is the rebellion of Hermia against her father Egeus. Although Egeus has intentions for his daughter
to marry Demetrius, has indeed commanded her to marry Demetrius, Hermia is headstrong and intends to go against her fathers wishes and marry Lysander. Egeus arrives on the scene
