RE: Prescriptive Authority for Pharmacists Health
care is subjected to daily challenges from a number of political, economic, and societal perspectives. As you are most certainly aware, the present climate of fiscal restraint and control
at the hands of drug companies has resulted in a system which discourages preventative approaches to health care. Instead of encouraging preventative methodologies such as attention to proper nutrition,
the use of vitamins, and the utilization of alternative approaches such as massage and acupuncture, medicine in this country relies almost entirely on pharmacological approaches. This situation is further
complicated by the fact that doctors are not always as well versed as they should be regarding the relative benefits verses the potential perils of various drugs. When patients
are prescribed a complicated assortment of drugs by one or even an assortment of physicians the likelihood for error, sometimes quite serious error, is increased substantially. Not only does
this result in a lowered quality of health, it results in a significant economic drain as errors are made, drugs counteract one another, and patients lose more and more respect
for health care professionals and the health care system as a whole. A potential solution lies in allowing prescriptive privilege to pharmacists, those health care professionals whose expertise is
within pharmacology itself not within one obscure medical specialty or another. Today pharmacists are aggressively seeking to increase the role that they play
