This is a 5 page paper discussing a specific mass media incident that posed an ethical dilemma and some examples of codes of ethics within media. Editors and executive officers in charge of mass media operations have formatted over 33 known codes of ethics and values in the media. Many of the codes of ethics deal with public relations and moral dilemmas, conflict of interest issues, timeless values, new technology, sources and reporters, editorial independence and diversity issues among other areas of concern. Nevertheless, cases which test the codes of media ethics continue to be an issue in the public and journalist world.

On May 19th, 1998, press critics charge that a Florida newspaper and radio station acted improperly and unethically when they called a hostage-holding killer for
a live radio interview. When the St. Petersburg Times and WFLA-AM called and interviewed a murder suspect who was holding a hostage inside a gas station, press critics claim that
they acted inappropriately and broke media ethics by endangering the hostages life (Noack, 1998). Hank Carr a 30 year old ex-convict was arrested on May 19th for the murder
of his lovers 4 year old son. While being taken away in the police car, Carr seized a policemans gun and shot to death both officers guarding him. After stealing
a Ford truck, Carr then led police cars and helicopters in a 50 mile chase and in the process shot at the police helicopter and shot and killed a state
highway patrolman in the pursuit. He then pulled into a Shell gas station and convenience store in Hernando County and took the lone gas station clerk, 27 year old Stephanie
Diane Kramer as hostage (Noack, 1998). During the four hour stand off with police, WFLA-AM called the convenience store and the phone was answered by Carr. The conversation was then
fed on the air live as the radio news director, Don Richards, led the gunman in a seven minute interview as the hostage sat close by. During the interview Carr
