Abner at the same time. For Sarty and Abner, arson has become a part of life. In fact, due to the antics of Abner, arson has become a way of
life. As the title suggests, something is burning and as it turns out, Sartys father is an arsonist. When Abner is angry, he sets fires. It is as simple as
that, but the reality is that it is infinitely more complicated. The family moves around a lot as they are farmers, but obviously, after a new fire is set,
the family finds that they must move again. Clearly, when one "burns their bridges" so to speak, they must find a new gig. The arsonist in this work almost literally
burns his bridges, or barns in this work. The real conflict comes when Sarty warns the latest farm owner about what his father is about to do and this will
create an estrangement between himself and Abner. Actually, Abner Snopes is void of emotion and one might call him a sociopath. It seems that in addition to the fact
that Abner cares nothing for his family or the people he hurts along the way, he does have limited intelligence and a limited means to make a living. The fires
he sets may be construed as the rage that burns inside of him. This arsonist is continually immersed in the possibilities of death throughout the course of the story. Of
course, at any time, someone could die. It is only at the end of the piece that he meets his own death. Abner Snopes does not know how to express
his feelings appropriately and so he lashes out with the use of fire. He is a typical arsonist, but one can look at his story another way. Snopes may also
