on the Tel-Aviv Stock Exchange and went public in 1982 ("The Dan," 2003). However, 87% of the shares are owned by the Federmanns (2003). The firm owns twelve
hotels in all and the Ministry of Tourism considers most of these as first class facilities (2003). The firm is run by a President who answers to a board
of directors ("The Dan," 2003). The hotels are independently managed and evaluated but the chain supports a large supervisory network which ensures that standards and objectives are met
(2003). It dictates "what professional standards are required, by means of clear procedures in every professional field of the chain, in order to ensure a uniformly high level of service
and top quality personnel and management" (2003). This standard is achieved via professional instruction provided by the Dan College of Quality Leadership and Services (2003). Quality is key at
Dan hotels. For example, at the King David Hotel, a 460 person staff is responsible for 237 rooms, which puts it at an extraordinary room to staff ratio (Ruggia, 2001).
