couple, Lucille and J. D. Brown, met while both were stationed in Parris Island at the Marine Corps Base there right after World War II. Lucy (as she prefers
to be called) had joined the Marine Corps from her hometown of Des Moines, Iowa, and had been stationed at Parris Island. She soon heard talk that this good
looking lieutenant Brown was going to be stationed there as well, in the same department she was in, and all the women Marines were quite excited about the prospect of
meeting him. He had been in the Marine Raider Battalion and was quite well-known for all the war action he had seen on the Japanese Islands. He was
considered one of the many returning war heroes. Lucy decided if he was that popular with all the ladies then she wanted nothing to do with him.
Sure enough, he was stationed in her department, and every day she had to pass his desk. She kept her eyes straight ahead and never acknowledged him, as women
all about him were flirting and trying to get his attention. Naturally, it was Lucy that he was most interested in. At a company picnic one Saturday, J.
D. noticed Lucy sitting under a tree with the guy she was dating at the time. J. D. later got the guy off to the side and sent him
on some wild and made-up errand to run, and while he was gone, J. D. went and sat under the tree with Lucy. Pretty soon he had her laughing
