dismissals had nothing to do with economics and everything to do with presidential politics. Yeltsin is determined to control the political process until the vote is taken in 2000 (Coleman).
The Cabinet sackings begin to make sense, and especially the dismissal of Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin, when it is considered that Prime Minsiter was becoming a political threat to Yeltzin.
Machiavelli, a 16th-century political philosopher, would have approved heartily of Yeltzin?s actions. In his book The Prince, which was published in 1532, Machivelli laid out precise directions for acquiring and
maintaing power within a political structure. Machiavelli viewed the state as an organic organism with its ruler as the head and the people of the state composing the body. He
felt that a healthy state was unified, orderly and in balance which caused its people to be happy and have security. On the other hand, an unhealthy state required
stern measures if order was to be restored. To accomplish these ends, Machiavelli stated that a leader needed to use whatever means was necessary to preserve and restore the state
to order--cruelty, deception, and force were all justified in his view if these forces accoplished the desired goals. In wielding absolute power, rather ruthlessly, Yeltsin exemplified many of Machiavelli?s principles.
During Yeltsin?s illness, it appears that Chernomyrdin and other ministers had been increasingly ruling in his name, thus sapping his authority and prestige (Christian; Auster 45). After Chernomyrdin unofficially began
