the merger maid sense, the employees of Denton were angry with the owners, Scott and Edna Forester, because they hadnt shared information of the merger with the employees, nor sought their input -- though the employees were well-protected in their jobs. After the merger, many had left, while productivity declined. Scotts method of dealing with the problem was to threaten the employees, while Edna offered apologies to the employees, acknowledge the wrongdoing in not including employees in the decision-making process and asking what could be done to "create a company we can all be proud of?" Some of the employees were contemptuous of the comments, while others felt it exciting, being a part of something new. But the question we need to ask here is, what are some of the emotional intelligence strengths Edna offers, what are her blind spots and where can she improve? What type of staff development and communications, based on the principles of emotional intelligence can be developed to help lead to the staffs success a year from now? Before answering these questions, it would first be helpful to define what, exactly, emotional intelligence is. Emotional intelligence, in its most basic form, understands that people are motivated by intelligence and can be tested by their emotional intelligence as well as their native intelligence (Higgs and Dulewicz, 2000).
