or despair. A serial killer is usually methodical and kills in a particular way. It is said that when there is three or more murders done in a certain characteristic
way, then it is the work of a serial killer. Different from spree killers who go on rampages, serial killers usually plan out their murders. They plot and plan. They
lie in wait. They seem to be a different animal from other types of criminals. In examining the phenomenon, many questions loom and answers come from a variety of disciplines.
There are many attributes that serial killers possess in common. They like to be noticed and taunt police and they hardly ever confess. Most serial murderers do not want to
be caught (Holmes & Holmes, 1992). Of course, Edmund Kemper is one exception as he simply gave himself up, claiming that the killings just had to cease (1992). Kemper had
already killed his mother by that time as well as her friend the next day (1992). He is unusual as there is no particular peculiarity and no real signature to
speak of. Many serial killers however seem to want to be noticed and they feel powerful when playing their cat and mouse games with police, but one important question lingers.
What makes serial killers kill? It is a hard question to answer as there are many different theories. The disciplines of psychology, sociology and biology do each contribute
to the literature on serial killing. The most prevalent theories are related to psychology. It is thought, at least from a Freudian perspective, that the killer is acting out on
unresolved feelings for women for example. Generations have seen Alfred Hitchcocks portrayal of Norman Bates, a psychopath, in the 1960 release of the film Psycho. Hannibal Lecter would be portrayed
