largely from television shows. What happens is that when someone is charged with a crime, a deal is sometimes made to reduce a charge. The deal mandates that the suspect
plea guilty, usually to a lesser charge, so that the court system can run smoothly. In other words, the plea is offered because the government would prefer to lock this
suspect up and avoid the chance that he be let go. For example, they might offer someone charged with a capital crime the chance to live if he would plead
guilty. This accomplishes two things. One, the state is assured that the miscreant is punished. Two, it reduces the amount of time invested in a lengthy trial. Plea bargains
are expedient, but it is akin to gambling. The prosecution does not want to gamble with a jury, for instance, as they fear that the suspect might be let go.
Everyone remembers the reaction to the OJ Simpson trial. Despite the fact that OJ Simpson was found Not Guilty in his criminal trial, many people believed that he should have
been convicted. The fact that no plea deal was made allowed for this possibility. The gamble is also something that is quite relevant for the suspect as well. For the
guilty, it allows for a reduced gamble. That is, the guilty defendant can take a plea and get out of prison earlier than he might if he would be found
guilty and be sentenced by a judge. Even an innocent man might want to take the deal, because despite the fact that he is innocent, he could still be sent
