Yet, at any given point, one can say that it is easy to see how the present situation manifested over time. Going back a hundred years ago for example, there
were bank panics, but then the federal reserve system was created and things would become smoother. The panics were prevalent and in 1873, for example, there were as many as
101 bank failures in September (Wicker, 2001). It was simply a time when banks could not be trusted. Today, people know when they put their money in the bank, it
is insured by the government, at least up to a certain point. There is now no fear of using banks. This was not the case at the time. Of
course things were not perfect after the Federal Reserve was formed. There was the Great Depression for example. But the volatility that people would live with early on-such as in
Its a Wonderful Life-would dissipate over time. Although things improved, again, things are never perfect when it comes to the economy. There was a market crash in 1987,
but the effects were short lived. The government perhaps made some changes as it did shortly after 9/11, and nothing would match the impact that things had on the
economy early in the twentieth century. Hence, in looking at todays world, where the economy is relatively stable, one can see that it has a history on which to rest.
Things are not smooth due to chance, but due to a long history of creating stability based on a number of factors. What is the relevance of economic data
