an increase in wholesale prices and for some, an increase in retail prices as well ("Sweets go sour at Hershey," 2008). Such a situation is never a good omen. After
all, raising prices out of necessity signifies financial trouble. Competitors Nestle and Mars have not followed suit ("Sweets go sour at Hershey," 2008). Therefore, in some way, Hershey is doing
less well than its major competitors. Before evaluating Hershey as a company, and examining its annual report, it pays to provide an overview of the candy industry. First, it
should be said that the industry is quite popular in the United States. Americans consume more than 7 billion pounds of candy annually ("Industry Snapshot," 2008). Candy is quite visible
on store shelves and in many check out aisles. People grab candy bars quite frequently, and this keeps the companies in business. While growth was good during the 1990s, by
the middle of that decade, introductions of new product had been lowered ("Industry Snapshot," 2008). This signified a substantial change for the niche. Slow but steady growth in the industry
characterized the 2000s ("Industry Snapshot," 2008). Examples of serious competitors, other than the big three, are Lance, Leaf, Russell Stover, Brach, Sathers, Tootsie Roll, Farley Foods, and Archibald Candy ("Industry
Snapshot," 2008). The industry includes many family owned enterprises ("Industry Snapshot," 2008). Many founders and their stories are well known. For example, Milton S. Hershey developed the first candy bar
