often think that these statistics may truly mean very little for it appears as though the statistics are perhaps biased or are the result of a improperly focused study. With
that in mind we must also understand that statistics are the only way we can even begin to see a trend or a problem in the society. The following paper
examines some statistics on violence, presented by the U.S. Department of Justice. The paper focuses on statistics presented that relate to violence in the workplace. Statistics According to
the statistics presented by the U.S. Department of Justice, "About 2 million people a year were victims of violent crime or threatened violent crime in the workplace from 1992 through
1996.......An estimated 1.5 million of such incidents (75 percent) were simple assaults. Of the occupations examined, law enforcement officers, corrections officers and taxicab drivers were victimized at the highest rates"
(U.S. Department of Justice, 2003). The statistics also indicated that, "During this same 1992-1996 period, an average of about 330,000 retail employees were victimized annually, and about 84,000 employees
were robbed in the workplace. Between 1994 and 1996 violent victimizations in the workplace decreased by 21 percent, paralleling a 17 percent decline in overall violent crime during that period"
(U.S. Department of Justice, 2003). Now, without a great deal of information about prior conditions as they relate to violence in the workplace, we do not necessarily see if
this is an increase or a decrease. And, in addition, we must also note that in todays society people are more willing to admit to violence in the workplace than
