A student wants to "identify commonalities and differences in the management of quality in manufacturing and service industries." In answering this question, a student ought to point out that quality
in manufacturing goes to safety and compliance with regulation. Manufacturing is not found in a creative, flexible environment. Therefore, quality will be specific. For example, how many widgets can be
made in a set amount of time without waste being a part of the end product? How many cars can be built in a week? Service industries, on the
other hand, are qualitatively different. Quality there has to do with the outcome. If the customer feels good, provides compliments to the staff and gives good tips, and the establishment
has a good reputation, one can bet that quality is stellar. Of course, some service industries also have to pay attention to less flexible features. A limousine service wants friendly
drivers and so quality will be found in human resources, but they want to provide clean, comfortable and aesthetically pleasing vehicles as well. One can see that quality means different
things to different companies and within industries. It can also be applied to different areas of the same company. TQM in manufacturing will be aligned with some of the same
elements as it is in the service sector, but of course, there will be differences. There are different compliance issues in each, as well as different goals in servicing the
