With the Wind draws on the countryside and the rolling hills, which without would not have given the characters room to grow. In The English Patient, the mood is dismal
because the characters have gone through a bloody war. Yet, they have a refuge in a villa that has been harmed, but nevertheless creates a sense of safety amongst the
rubble. The Villa San Girolamo, according to a student, is a socially symbolic setting. In the novel itself, the author writes: "The Villa San Griolamo, built to protect inhabitants from
the flesh of the devil, had the look of a besiged fortress, the limbs of most of the statues blown off during the first days of shelling" (Ondaatje 43). First
and foremost, this villa is isolated from the rest of the world. Though it is involved in war too, it is separate and apart from it in some way. This
isolation plays a role as it creates a microcosm of a safe haven in the midst of the uncertainty of war. This is true despite the fact that it has
been hurt by war. It stands. The people are in some way in a sense of a denial. The author goes on in terms of the description: "There seemed
little demarcation between house and landscape, between damaged building and the burned and shelled remnants of the earth. To Hana the wild gardens were like further rooms" (Ondaatje 43). This
last sentence is important. To Hana, the gardens were rooms and so it makes little sense to concern oneself about the physical buildings when the outdoors can function the same
