reflection of individual differences, persists through generations, and is universal. It also involves beliefs. One can see that the current society is stratified largely by wealth. This is notable because
stars like Paris Hilton and Lindsay Loham make headlines and they can virtually do whatever they like. Those at the other end of the spectrum will have to work almost
every day in order to make money to provide sustenance. Society is also sometimes stratified by gender and religion, but by and large, the system is thought to be stratified
primary by class. Money plays a large part in this model. Social mobility of course can help people move from one class to the next. At least that is
possible in the United States and is part of the American dream. This is true even though class is not exclusively tied to money. Education and culture play a part
in the stratification as well. Yet, it is possible for people to move from one stratum to another. Yet, it is not possible in some cultures that for example do
not allow women the same freedoms as men or have a caste system where social mobility is impossible. India still has a caste system. In fact, at the lowest level,
one of every six people are born into the untouchables stratum (Hempel, 2005). Such a closed systems allows little social mobility where the open systems do. Slavery, debt bondage and
prostitution-some of which go on in other nations to this day-are things that sometimes stratify society. Sometimes, even a socially stratified society like the United States, where social mobility is
