analysis. If he had not thought to try to at least interject such a strategy, the analysis would be suspect. After all, in order to evaluate anything, a controlled, ordinarily
logic should ideally be employed. This is true for any social science. Of course, it is something easier said than done. First, what did Max Weber say about the Protestant
work ethic and capitalism? Weber writes: "The difference between capitalistic and pre-capitalistic spirits is not to be found at this point. The greed of the Chinese Mandarin, the old Roman
aristocrat, or the modern peasant, can stand up to any comparison" (Weber, 1991,p. 56). Here, the theorist makes it clear that the spirit of capitalism is not about greed, or
accumulating material wealth. Rather, it is a calling. One is called to do a particular type of work, using their God-given talents. In fact Weber devotes an entire chapter to
the concept of the calling. Of course, money does enter the picture. Money however is merely the measurement. It is compensation for work, an amount that is doled out to make
things fair, but nothing more. It should be emphasized that Weber does not applaud greed. Instead, he explains that people can earn money while being frugal at the same time.
Webers argument concerning the origin of capitalism in his classic work has implications for the rationale of the modern West. By evaluating Protestantism in light of the spirit of capitalism,
one can see that Weber presents a controlled view with comparison. It is hard to evaluate anything without using the art of comparison and Weber does this in a variety
of ways. He looks at religion and by comparing it in some sense to the use of money, one can see religion in a different context. Money is something that
