another important aspect of film is something called mise-en-scene, or style. Films have to be created in such a way as to captivate their audience. Some films simply sell due
to their violent, sexual or thematic content. There are films which appeal to teens for example and they do not have to have much style. Films dubbed as "artsy" for
example will be of a higher caliber. Certainly, to win Academy Awards, or other awards, films have to be stylistically great. What is mise-en-scene, and do modern day films
really possess it to its fullest potential, or has special effects and commercialism gotten in the way? After all, one can argue that when making a film, there are many
stake holders involved. Sometimes, sponsors will requisite that the actors drink Coke for example. All of these minute requirements can take away from director control and creative license. At the
same time, directors have what those in the past did not, which is a stellar assortment of tools. These include high-tech camera and editing equipment to the ability to use
special effects as never before. Thus, there is mise-en-scene today and some film makers even draw on techniques of the past in order to make their artistic statements. First,
what is mise-en-scene exactly? The origin of the word mise-en-scene may be equated with theater, and it means placing on the stage, or staging ("Mise," 2002). Some have
