had even projected when the year began (Kiley, 2003). While having profits more than double is quite an accomplishment, GE also announced that its fourth quarter earnings for 2002
quadrupled ("GMs 4th-quarter," 2003). That revelation is quite astounding in any year, but is particularly interesting in a year when automobile companies have been making deep cuts to sell their
products to a public that is worried about the economy. There may be some explanation for the increases. The numbers had been helped by sales of greater than premium-priced
vehicles, particularly as it respects the Cadillac brand, along with more pickups and sport-utility vehicles, something that provides higher profits than ordinary passenger cars ("GMs 4th-quarter," 2003). In fact,
figures show that GM has sold a great deal more trucks than other vehicles according to reported statistics (See Appendix). While this was true for 2001 as well as 2002,
the numbers have increased in the latter year, demonstrating a new trend. Indeed, truck sales dominated the retail experience and it was reported that SUVs and pickups accounted for
58.5% (Kiley, 2003, p.6B) of total sales for General Motors. In general, GM earned $1.74 billion during 2002 (2003, p.6B); that is a figure which is up from
the $601 (Kiley, 2003, p.6B) million in 2001. The figures reported are quite astounding and one has to wonder what might be responsible for the drastic change. To
a large extent, the reported profit is probably related to price cuts, but reorganization a few years previously likely played a role in the companys success. General Motors Corporation
