her best work by many critics, as Ella is best live where she can improvise with the mood of the audience. Indeed, Ella has recorded many albums over her career--some
of which were live versions-- that spanned many decades, but certainly one can say that Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Gershwin Songbook is an excellent compilation of this artists work.
Ella Fitzgerald was born on April 25, 1917, in Newport News, Virginia and she is often called the first lady of song ("Fitzgerald," 2002). The songstress had a
long career (2002). It is no wonder. She had been graced with lucid intonation and her voice had a three octave range (2002). She had become the leading jazz
singer of her generation, and can boast more than 2,000 songs which collectively sold more than 40 million albums (2002). Ella would go on to win 13 Grammy Awards, including
one for Lifetime Achievement in 1967 (2002). She was actually the daughter of an unmarried laundress; her father would disappear before she was three years old (Bailey, 2002). Although she
was born in Virginia, she grew up in New York. In fact, she only lived in the south for a few years (McGill, 2002). Ella would grow up in
Yonkers but after the death of her mother would move to Harlem where she would reside with an aunt ("Fitzgerald," 2002). It is there that she became famous. It would
be after an amateur singing contest at the Apollo that Ellas talents would be known ("Fitzgerald," 2002). It would be a swing version of the nursery rhyme, A-Tisket, A-Tasket,
