orderly in life. Some might say that he points out the absurdity of what has come to be known as typical life. Simple things have unusual meanings. The author sees
the train, or railroad as a level of incarceration. The railways navigate through the cities and many think that they connect the people of the metropolis. But Certeau sees it
another way. The author suggests that the train incarcerates its inhabitants. It is a fixed space as opposed to a free space. While walking one can stop and smell the
roses so to speak. While riding, that is not possible. One can take Certeaus analogy a step further and look at railway navigation
and incarceration in more general terms. How does the train stifle the free flow of daily life in the city? When one walks they can choose which blocks to go
down. On the train, the path is the same everyday. If someone is mugged on the street, they can run away, call a policeman or fight back. On a train,,
options are few. All the people-the mugger, the victim, the passengers-are incarcerated. If there is no policeman on board, the victim is out of luck.
