Nothing better illustrates the concept that "the personal is the political" better
than the smoking ban that was recently passed in local government. Because of both the personal and political ramifications of that ban, it remains surrounded by heated debate.
The ban, never-the-less is in the best interest not just of non-smokers but smokers not just from our community but from all communities whose members travel here. The thesis
can thus be presented, as controversial as it might be, that: both smokers and non-smokers
should join together to welcome this new ban into our city. The controversy surrounding cigarette
smoking is both a personal and a political issue for me just as it is for many others. Few in our community really have no opinion when it comes
to the question of whether smoking should be allowed in public places. Those that smoke contend that they have the right to do so. Those of us that
do not smoke resent the fact that everywhere we go we are confronted with second hand smoke. When you are sensitive to cigarette smoke there is no place where
second hand smoke is a non-issue. The personal factors that are intertwined with the issues surrounding smoking turn into political factors when the rules and regulations concerning smoking enter
the picture. Such has certainly been the case with the recent smoking ban. Smoking rates among community members are obviously directly correlated
