the themes of modern living and gender roles. Discussion Carles writes at 20th century France, but the work seems like it takes place in another century, or on another planet. The life she describes is one of relentless drudgery and struggle that we dont normally associate with modern living. But Carles lives in the village of Val-des-Pr?s, in the mountains, and its cut off from the outside world by snow, at least six months out of the year (Carles, 1991). Today people say its one of the most beautiful places on earth, but before the First World War, "no one cared much about beauty, and this was the harshest place on earth. I lived that harshness, it marked everyone who lived here" (Carles, 1991, p. 15). That harshness is apparent from the first page of the book, when Emilie falls out of the hay loft onto the threshing floor two stories below and is knocked unconscious. Her father, on his way to another town to bring back a bull that will benefit the entire village by breeding with its cows, doesnt have time for something as minor as his daughters fall (Carles, 1991). He does nothing: "He didnt say call the doctor or anything else although my weeping sisters did not know what to do; he just said Take care of her, put compresses on her head. Ive got to get moving" (Carles, 1991, p. 5). When he returns with the bull two or three days later, Emilie is awake and recovering, leading her father to state that its obvious the doctor wasnt necessary (Carles, 1991). The entire episode illustrates something that is difficult for most people to grasp today: the errand her father is running will benefit the entire village; in fact, its vital to their survival ...
