sanctions in the Middle East, the elements that led to the second Gulf War, including the acknowledgement of weapons of mass destruction and the problems that have arisen since
the September 11 World Trade Center tragedy determined some of the actions taken by the Bush presidency. Critics of George Bushs call for the turning over of weapons of mass
destruction have argued that Bushs interests have been purely economic, and come at a time when his approval rating in the United States was at an all time low.
Some say that Bushs decision to go to war extends from his belief that a victory against Saddam Hussein, and the discovery of weapons of mass destruction, will serve his
presidency and improve the economic and social condition of the Bush regime. Since the end of World War II, US defense and foreign policy has been based on
the assertion of the USs superpower status and the ability to separate the country from other countries based on our defense capabilities. National security has been maintained not by
the waging of war, but by the ability to wage war; not necessarily by the demonstration of our defense capabilities, but by the visibility of the threat of our defense
capabilities. It has been recognized that the United States has greater defense capabilities than they have ever demonstrated, but that specific acts, like the bombing of Hiroshima and the
